The booming “metaverse” offers the furniture industry a potential meta-market

Threekit CTO and Founder Ben Houston says that in the future, furniture companies will be able to offer branded virtual products to people playing video games such as Roblox, an online gaming platform. and an authoring system that allows its users to program games as well as play games created by others. The game offers free construction, allowing its users to create the spaces they desire, such as their own home.

“My daughter plays Roblox, and in that game she custom builds her dollhouses with digital representations of our physical possessions. In the metaverse, you can have digital twins for anything in your reality,” Houston said. “Furniture can be branded into these virtual worlds, and brands have to enter them with these virtual representations. I can practically sit in Herman Miller chairs with a Crate & Barrel table in the middle and know exactly what it would look like if I bought it in real life.

According to Houston, an important part of understanding the metaverse is that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are unique, non-interchangeable units of data stored on a digital ledger. NFTs use blockchain technology to give public proof of ownership, allowing internet users to truly own the digital assets purchased in the metaverse. The lack of interchangeability distinguishes NFTs from blockchain cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

A big opportunity for metaverse businesses will be the sale of virtual products, and NFTs help ensure that products are genuine and not counterfeit. Companies need to be able to protect their intellectual property, and NFTs provide products with a stamp of certification that is appropriately tracked.

The Metaverse will also provide the furniture industry with an advantage when it comes to room planning. The Metaverse will allow consumers to have digital twins for all of their physical inventory, which will make room planning much easier in the future.

“Online room planners are hard to use right now,” Houston said. “They never seem to have pieces of furniture that are exactly what you have or are looking for, but once you have these digital twins from your personal inventory, it becomes much easier to see different arrangements, to imagine how certain items fit together. “will add to a room and even play around with all kinds of colors. Threekit is working on its room planners, and I anticipate this will be a requirement in the furniture industry, both on a personal and corporate level .

Houston also predicts new furniture brands that only produce virtual furniture will emerge, and he pointed out that those who create virtual prototypes in the metaverse before physically producing them will save money by taking advantage of on-demand testing. . He thinks companies will be able to see consumer reaction to products without producing them.
