TIRUCHY: The slabs covering the storm drains on the roads of the city have developed cracks in several places. Although the company assured people, time and time again, that all damaged slabs would be replaced, little action was taken, residents said.

On Wednesday, a slab on Shastri Road broke and a pedestrian fell into a sewer. Although he escaped with minor injuries, residents criticized the civic body for failing to pay attention to a serious problem. It may be noted that some residents had placed old doors and plywood boards covering broken slabs in front of their buildings.

“We placed an old gate covering a drainage channel in April as several people were using the road. On Wednesday the remaining slabs in front of our building broke causing a pedestrian to fall into the drainage. don’t know when the authorities are going to realize the seriousness of the problem,” said Pakkirisamy, caretaker of a commercial building on Shastri Road.

Another resident, Selvakumar, who also placed old plywood boards on damaged tiles in front of his apartment, said: “We pay taxes to the company and they have to fix or replace the broken tiles. We hope those responsible realize what is happening and take Quick Action.”

Apart from Shastri Road, the slabs of the drainage canals of Thillai Nagar, housing the residence of the company commissioner and other officials, are also damaged. “The company should have their team carry out inspections in all areas and replace all broken slabs. They cannot ignore this crucial issue by citing monsoon preparation works,” said KR Raj, a inhabitant of Thillai Nagar. Officials, once alerted, promised to act immediately.
