Nightmare tenant makes landlord’s life hell by completely destroying his home

A Grimsby landlord has been left with over £ 15,000 in damages caused by an evicted nightmare tenant.

The house has broken doors, broken appliances, and furniture has either been burnt or illegally sold on Facebook.

Outside became infested with rats. A trailer has become a mountain of dirty diapers, food waste, beer cans and broken toys.

The owner, who asked to remain anonymous, rented out the Immingham property in April last year and says he went through hell in the face of the nightmarish tenant.

In addition to the £ 15,000 in damages, he paid legal fees to evict the tenant.

The procedure began in September 2020 when the tenant was given six months’ notice to leave, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed the eviction.

The tenant, who was in arrears on rent, then failed to appear in court in August when he was summoned.

The rubbish attracted rats which invaded the property and the surrounding area

They finally left around the August bank holiday weekend without handing over the keys.

The eviction was only completed last week, leaving the owner with incomprehensible damage to his home and welfare.

He said: “Most of the kitchen doors are missing, the built-in appliances no longer seem to work. The handle on the back door is missing, there is not even a lock now.

“The toilet is leaking and instead of telling me the tenant put towels around it which made matters worse as the laminate floor is completely destroyed. There is nothing on the property that is not been spared.

“The property was fully furnished when I rented it to the tenant and now there is almost nothing left inside.

“You wouldn’t know what it looked like before and what it looks like now. All of my items were either sold on Facebook or burned outside in a fire.

“To be honest I got to a point where I wasn’t as concerned with the items, I just wanted the tenant to leave the house.”

There were even issues with the exterior of the property.

He adds: “The back garden is a real mess because there was a lot of waste that attracted rats. I have a trailer in the garden where I used to keep my personal belongings. But as you can see in the photos, it’s just been filled with every possible garbage you can think of such as dirty diapers, food waste, beer cans, toys and more.

“The surrounding neighborhood complained about a rat problem.

“The tenant left trash everywhere. I was told they didn’t take out the trash throughout their stay, which is pretty obvious with all the mess. It’s absolutely disgusting.

“Everything I worked so hard to put in this house is now gone or completely ruined.”

He said it had been an emotional and stressful process and felt disappointed with the legal process which he said is more on the tenant side than the landlord.

The whole experience made him wonder if he can be trusted to rent a property again.

He said: “It has been a nightmare. I condemn what the tenants have left me.

“I have received abuse and all kinds of violence, which hits you really hard.

“At the end of the day, I don’t want this to happen to my worst enemy. Either way, I’m going to have to pay the damages as I rent or sell the property again.

“Renting isn’t all it’s supposed to be.”

It was a trying experience for the owner.

They remarked, “Everything I worked so hard to put in this house is now gone or completely ruined. It’s quite moving and stressful – I’m very angry – but I have no clear idea of ​​myself asking them to pay the rent – which they never did.

“The biggest annoyance is that the government is on the tenant’s side, rather than the landlords. I went through hell and felt it was out of my control because of the legal process.”

Now the owner must think about his options as he weighs the financial and emotional implications of the whole experience.

He says, “It’s been a nightmare. I condemn what the tenants left me. I received abuse and all kinds of things that hit you really hard. In the end, I don’t want it to happen. to my worst enemy. Either way. I’m going to have to pay for the damages, whether I rent or sell the property again. Renting isn’t all the claims are made. “
